In the United States, including Michigan where Copper Harbor is located, both locals and foreigners can legally marry, and the process involves specific legal requirements and paperwork. Here’s how it works specifically for Copper Harbor, located in Grant Township, Keweenaw County, Michigan:

  • For Locals and Foreigners: Marriage License: Couples must apply for a marriage license from the Keweenaw County Clerk’s office. There is a three-day waiting period between applying for and receiving the license, although this can sometimes be waived for a fee.
  • Valid Identification: Both parties must provide valid identification such as a driver’s license or a passport.
  • Fees: There is a fee for the marriage license – 20-30 USD.
  • Specific Steps for Foreigners: No Residency Requirement: Michigan does not require residency, making it straightforward for foreigners to marry here.
  • Documentation: Foreigners should bring a valid passport and, if applicable, a birth certificate. If previously married, documentation proving the dissolution of previous marriages might be required when choosing to elope in Michigan.
  • As Your Officiant: I am ordained and can legally officiate your marriage here in Michigan, making it possible for me to not only capture your special day through photography but also to guide your ceremony, ensuring that it is both personalized and legally recognized.
  • Organizing the Paperwork: It’s important to contact the Keweenaw County Clerk’s office directly for detailed information and to ensure all legal requirements are met before your ceremony. This is crucial for your marriage to be officially recognized.
  • Advice: For couples planning both a symbolic and legal ceremony in Copper Harbor, I recommend beginning the paperwork process well in advance of your scheduled Lake Superior Elopement wedding ceremony. If coming from abroad or out of state, consider arriving early to finalize any necessary details, ensuring a smooth and joyful wedding day.
